Institute of Language Studies and Research creation's background

The Institute of English, Calcutta (IEC) was set up in 1963 to impart training in English Language Teaching (ELT) to in-service school teachers and accordingly used to offer two times per year a diploma course of 4 months' duration. The Institute has two buildings at good locations in South Kolkata including a state of art language laboratory and a library with more than 20,000 books. It has eight sanctioned teaching posts including that of the Director, one sanctioned Librarian post and nine sanctioned non-teaching posts. All except one Group D post are lying vacant as of now. One JDPI is officiating as the Director in addition to his normal duties.
The present proposal is to upgrade the Institute of English, Calcutta (IEC) into an institute of excellence, with a fresh mandate to further its potential as centre of sustained language studies. It is proposed to rename it as Institute of Language Studies and Research (ILSR)
