Institute of Language Studies and Research (ILSR), an institute under the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, functions as a nodal centre for research, documentation of language and culture-related materials, translation studies and training in cultural and linguistic interaction.

This premiere institute connects various academic institutions operating in the fields of language & literature, linguistics, and social sciences.

Given the multilingual fabric of the state of West Bengal, ILSR aims at sculpting new frontiers of knowledge by inquiring into existing templates of Indian classical languages, and the languages and cultures of different communities, especially those who are in peripheral and endangered positions. As of now there is no institute of Higher Learning with exclusive focus on Bangla Language, linguistics, Translation and cultural research.

ILSR endeavours to meet the needs of an institute which can help Bangla Language attaining the status of a Classical Language through archival research and advanced studies. It also intends to cater to the growing need for globalizing Bangla language and culture.
